Chester-le-Street 1 v 3 Leeds City Vixens.
Vixens started nervously in their last but one match of the season against Chester-le-Street tonight. Vital goals to add to their goal difference proved elusive as the vixens struggled to find their most recent dominating form. At half time it was 1 - 1 and the pressure was really on in a game they realistically had to win to keep alive any promotion ambitions. With less than twenty minutes remaining the vixens eventually scored what could prove to be a title winning goal to much celebration and relief all around. This was followed by a further goal with only minutes remaining on the clock.

Caernarfon 0 v 12 Preston North End.
Despite never conceding more than 2 goals in any match at home this season Caernarfon failed to stop Preston in their attempt to improve their goal difference and climb back to the top of the league.
At half time it was 5 - 0 and despite a lenient referee Caernarfon still managed to get a player sent off. A 10 woman side was no match for second in the table Preston and in the first 35 minutes of the second half Preston ran riot racking up 7 more goals. Caernarfon were lucky not to have another player sent off when a bizarre advantage was given to Caernarfon after a crunching last man tackle. Preston eased up during the last 10 minutes, presumably believing they had done enough to win the league. The ball hardly went into the Preston half for the whole of the second half, Indeed the only time the Preston goalie touched the ball during the second half was because of a passback. Preston celebrated at the final whistle as if they had won the league......

Vixens lose out in last match debacle |
|
7th May 2006 |
In an exciting end to the season Leeds City Vixens looked poised for promotion after two recent emphatic victories. Leading the Women's Northern Combination league on goal difference from Preston North End it was all down to the final match of the season with only one team to be promoted. They were due to play bottom of the table Garswood whilst Preston travelled to Caernarfon.
After a shameful day in Women's football the Vixens look to have missed out on promotion after their final match against Garswood was mysteriously cancelled and Preston managed to beat Caernarfon by 12 goals to nil. This ensured that even if the Garswood results were expunged from the league (as seems likely after they failed to fulfil their fixtures) then Preston would still be the league champions (on goals scored, see table below) from the vixens. Garswood initially telephoned saying they only had nine players, Unbelievably this was later changed to six players and the Vixens were told that Garswood would not be contesting the match. Fans turning up for the match were incredulous with many believing in a conspiracy between Garswood and their neighbours Preston, (Who, mysteriously seemed to know about the vixens cancellation and just how many to score in their match at Caernarfon).
It was a sad end to a day which had started with the Vixens top of the league and ended with them second after they were refused their chance to play for promotion. The days events will be closely scrutinised by the FA and an appeal has already been instigated by the Vixens.
Final league positions IF Garswood points were expunged:
Team | P | W | D | L | F | A | GD | Pts |
Preston North End | 18 | 15 | 1 | 2 | 72 | 22 | 50 | 46 |
Leeds City Vixens | 18 | 15 | 1 | 2 | 67 | 17 | 50 | 46 |
|

After four days of deliberation the league has finally published some kind of league table. It appears to show Preston at the top of the table, But inconsistencies prevail throughout the table with reference to cancelled matches.

The Vixens appeal was heard today in Manchester....
John, Peter and I have all returned from Manchester totally drained. After presenting our case and hearing the League's defence which was poor. The league was then cross questioned by the 3 man judge team who I thought hit on some significant weaknesses in the leagues actions i.e. why did they not entertain extending the league and numbers of personnel present to make a binding decision.
Anyway, We retired after an hour and a half only to return half an hour
later for a short statement stating that our case had been
dismissed and we had lost our 50 (with no further explanation).
So we remain in the Northern combination league and as far as I can see this
could all happen again next season when we have one playing week less and 2
extra league games to get in.
